Chittaurgarh Fort (Rajasthan, India)

The huge fortress - also called Chittor, Chittorgarh or Chittaur - was a bone of contention for centuries. Between the 14th and 16th century the Rajput stronghold was conquered three times. Thousands of warriors died, thousands of women and children committed jauhar or were forced to do so (photos taken Elmar Pfeiffer in February 2012).
